Summer Games Done Quick begins today with a flurry of speedruns

A world-class video game speedrun competition gets under way today

Summer Games Done Quick 2022 kicks off today, running from June 26th to July 3rd, and is one of the best gaming speedrun events. If you haven't heard of GDQ's annual summer bash, which brings together some of the best and most entertaining speedrunners to raise money for a good cause, this is it.

Where can you watch the SGDQ live stream? It's on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel

To be expected, the SGDQ schedule for this year features a number of noteworthy PC entries. You can view the complete schedule here. There's already a Mass Effect run here on the first day. It's important for people all over the world to have access to Doctors Without Borders, a vital resource in the midst of ongoing conflict.

Three million, four hundred thousand dollars. Every penny goes to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Never before in the history of the speedrunning charity event had the $1 million and $2 million donation marks been reached faster, with the total sum even exceeding the previous year's impressive haul of $2.7 million.

Of course, the nine new speedrunning world records set during the online-only event between January 9 and January 16 were not the only ones.

Awe-inspiring performances were put on display. They see the Matrix where you see a simple platformer, and they prepare their muscles and nerves for every spike pit in advance so that they can reach the title sequence before the majority of players have even encountered a boss. It's truly a sight to behold.

Also notable is how quickly Michriz, who was blindfolded, completed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. He finished the entire game in about two hours and fifteen minutes.

Mitchriz's demeanour suggestion

Mitchriz's demeanour suggests that he was a ninja in a previous life. No, we aren't saying this because he looks good in black; rather, we are praising him because he was able to complete the notoriously difficult Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice while completely blindfolded! To devastating effect, he has memorised his strides and attack combos through the use of only sound cues. He's able to sit down and blitz through the map in just over two hours, 45 minutes under the estimated finish time, while most of us would spend the time trying not to bang into a coffee table. It's not covered by Epic.

Being this good should be a crime; it's akin to using a cheat code. Although InsertLogic has travelled a long way on Kena: Bridge of Spirits, it will feel as if you've been walking alongside him the whole time. It's almost as if you can hear the cogs in his head whirring as he solves puzzles and comes up with a solution in less than 30 minutes, which is a remarkable achievement. It's just the kind of heartwarming content to keep you cosy on a cold night, as he's visibly emotional upon learning he's broken the World Record on hard mode.

The Herculean effort of ShadowthePast on Webbed is an excellent speedrun if you're short on time, as he completes the indie game in just over 18 minutes. With so many obstacles in such a short period of time, ShadowthePast provides a fascinating performance as he weaves through the game and provides commentary on his workings, such as the potential movements of a boss. It's priceless when he realises he's broken the World Record (his previous best was over 18 minutes). It's worth the time to watch the video a little longer to hear him explain why he feels so strongly about cancer research. A real champion in every sense of the word.

Gamers are usually supposed to be scared by in-game ghouls, not vice versa. Pumpkin Jack's ghosts will have wet their sheets when they see Jaxler charging at them with an enormous lantern for a head and supersonic reflexes to avoid their attacks, so spare a thought for them. With ease, Jaxler brushes aside all obstacles, registering a speedrun of 53 minutes and 17 seconds. Whether on foot, horse or runaway train cart, Jaxler doesn't let up. A new record has been set.
